Remembering Marian K. Shaughnessy

Marian Shaughnessy was a practitioner, educator and administrator in critical care and nursing care. As a traveling nurse, she worked with indigenous populations in Colorado and Alaska and in several acute-care settings in Greater Cleveland. She served on the board of directors of University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and the board of trustees for the American Nurse Foundation. Marian was passionate to transform health care for all populations and to improve the nation’s health. Inspired by her extraordinary vision the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University was named after her; it was at Case Western Reserve University that Marian earned her doctorate in Nursing Practice.

Marian Shaughnessy passed away on February 24 2020 after battling ovarian cancer.

While Marian’s fight is over now; the battle continues. Here at UCSD’s nanoIE Center and in the Steinmetz Lab, we seek to unlock the power of the immune system to fight cancer. We believe that bio-inspired immune system engineering is the future of human health. We are committed to innovate and develop technology to win the battle against cancer in honor of Marian.
